16 Horror Films Worth Getting Excited About In 2016
4. Amityville: The Awakening
2016 is apparently the year of horror franchises returning, as in addition to The Ring, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Jeepers Creepers, we've also got the return of The Amityville Horror.
You're probably thinking this is the third or fourth Amityville flick, right? Nope. It's actually the fourteenth film in the series. Did we really need that many?
It's had four theatrical films and nine direct to video ones, making it one of the most massive horror franchises ever. Despite that, the average person doesn't even realize these have been coming out.
Amityville: The Awakening is the first theatrical Amityville film since the 2005 version, and it appears to be a direct sequel, following a new family who moves into the house in modern times. The plot is similar, but the characters are completely different, so this won't be a Psycho situation where we're just seeing the same movie again.
The trailer makes mention of the murders in the 1970s, but it's not clear if the original film's hauntings also happened. If so, how stupid is this family for moving into the house without knowing about its history first?
The fact that they're apparently doing their own thing with the story is refreshing, though, and even if it's not great, The Awakening is virtually guaranteed to be the best Amityville film in quite some time.
