9. Witness
A film by master Australian director, Peter Weir, Witness sees Harrison Ford's (in his greatest dramatic role and the only one to ever bring him an Oscar nomination) detective character, John Book, go hiding in Amish country in order to protect a young boy who is the sole witness to a murder. One of the best crime-thrillers of the 80s, Witness is arguably Weir's most accessible film, genuinely gripping and with an intense love story to boot. Beautiful to look at (as shot by legendary director of photography, John Seale), the film appeals to both the arthouse - in its depictions of differing sets of mannerisms - and the popcorn - in its suspenseful nature - crowds, ensuring that you're likely to be pleased by Witness either way; it is a great example of a film both of its genre, and beyond it.
