17 Superhero Movies That Were Nominated For Oscars

Nominated For: Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Art Direction, Best Makeup, Best Sound Mixing, Best Visual Effects

This just in: with three Oscars and twelve nominations for five films,Batman is the most garlanded superhero of all time. In fact, the only Batman movies that didn't receive a nomination are Batman & Robin, The Dark Knight Rises and Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, which ought to tell you something.

For a PG-13 adaptation of a "mere" comic book, The Dark Knight is a wild, crazy, misanthropic movie laced with gallows humor and the kind of casual violence that wouldn't look out of place in the R-rated likes of Blade or Deadpool (see: The Joker's handy tip on making a pencil disappear).

You can see why the DCEU appropriated the movie's tone and look, but it's too bad they didn't have Christopher Nolan. Yes, it's a dark movie, but it also has a lightness of touch that keeps it from being ponderous and lead footed. Are you there, Mr Snyder?
