9. The Chamber Of Secrets Isn't Dark Enough

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is absolutely awesome and incredibly underrated, but it does have its issues nonetheless. The main issue is that it follows the light-weight, safe tone of the first film and, considering the story's horror vibes, isn't really as dark as it should've been.

Despite the fact that a terrifying monster is on the loose, there's not quite enough of a sense of threat at times. It also feels wildly contrived that several people are attacked by the basilisk yet no-one is killed because, conveniently, they all see it through something else (a camera, a mirror etc.).

It is still a very good film, but this lack of darkness remains an issue and additionally, this makes the film feel like a bit of a missed opportunity. This could've been the film in which the franchise matured, instead of the next one.

There was an easy fix here: there should've been a death. That probably would've made the film feel sufficiently dark and while that would've deviated from the source material, they really could've done with more deviations from the book here since the film is far too faithful to the book. Speaking of which...
