8. The First Two Films Are Far Too Faithful

The main issue with the first two films in the series, aside from Chris Columbus' flat direction, is that they are far, far too faithful to the books.

Of course, the first two books in the Harry Potter series are brilliant and this isn't a criticism of them in any way, but a novel's structure and a film's structure are very different and since the films follow a book structure so closely, they don't always feel that coherent as stories.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone particularly suffers from this, especially in its finale, which doesn't translate to the screen all that well (since it is a more internal and psychological series of obstacles). This is the main reason why the first film, however nostalgic it'll make you feel, is one of the weaker films in the series and isn't actually ageing that well.

Thankfully, from the next film onwards, the films would become more cinematic and move away from the books a bit more.
