2. The Opening - Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2

The Film

After the first movie delighted fans and opened up the cosmic arm of the MCU for James Gunn to explore in more meaningful ways in the future, a sequel was always going to follow and unpick the story of Peter's paternity mystery that was hinted at throughout the original.

But Vol 2 isn't just that - it also takes in the addition of new characters, a huge villainous plot for intergalactic dominion and the fierce sibling rivalry inspired in Thanos' daughters by his cruelty. It's a pretty packed affair to say the least and the fact that it is balanced is hugely impressive; that it also manages to shine in moments like Yondu's sacrifice and subsequent funeral is even more so.

The Moment

Yondu could have won best moment several times - and not only in dying - but it's ultimately the gloriously infectious opening sequence that wins out here. Following on from the first movie's self-conscious celebration of music (and specifically 70s music), the sequel opened with the single most tongue-in-cheek idea of the entire MCU: having Baby Groot dance to camera as his team-mates fought to defend the Sovereign's batteries from an inter-dimensional beast.

Thanks to the combination of Baby Groot and ELO's Mr Blue Sky, it's about the single most irresistible moment in any comic book movie. And you can stick your accusations of self-indulgence.
