18 Upcoming Villains Who Will Be More Interesting Than The Heroes
17. Set - Gods Of Egypt
The Hero: Seeking vengeance for the death of his father, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau’s god of the sun, Horus, will unite a team to hunt his killer down.
The Villain: Gerard Butler stars as Set, Egyptian god of both the desert and chaos, and the one responsible for killing Osiris, Horus’s father.
Why The Villain Will Be More Interesting: The stars of Alex Proyas's movies have never been the heroes themselves but rather the worlds they inhabit. It would hardly be a shock to see Proyas’s otherworldly version of ancient Egypt similarly overpower the characterization of Horus.
This could spell a similar fate for Set, but Proyas’s villains are often products of their worlds. He’s likely to thrive on the dark exuberance of this Egypt rather than try to oppose it as Horus will.
Furthermore, there’s some hope for Set since Gerard Butler is playing him. Butler often reads like wasted potential, choosing romantic comedies over dramatic material. Yet, some of his best work has come as villains in the likes of Coriolanus and Law Abiding Citizen. Having Butler unhinged could easily elevate his character and make him fascinatingly vicious.
