20 2010s Horror Movies You Must See Before You Die
13. The Killing Of A Sacred Deer
Plot: A surgeon has a horrifying curse placed on him and his family.
At the moment, A24 is perhaps the go-to for great American horror movies. They've given us many highly rewarding horror films over this past decade (including 2018's Hereditary, a mostly strong film which didn't quite make this list due to its unsatisfying ending) but The Killing of a Sacred Deer is definitely one of their best yet.
A surreal, otherworldly and intensely unsettling film work from director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favorite, The Lobster), this is a wonderfully unique and idiosyncratic work that is like no other recent horror film. Thanks to the great cinematography, superb atmosphere, hugely disturbing story and a chilling performance from rising star Barry Keoghan as the film's mysterious villain, this is a frightening movie but, more importantly, it's also a very sad and affecting one that really packs an emotional punch and takes influence from Greek Tragedy to brilliant effect. Aside from Keoghan, the rest of the cast is very strong as well.
This is one weird and wonderful horror film you don't want to miss and, for my money, it's superior to the Best Picture-nominated The Favorite.
