20 Absolutely Insufferable Film Characters Who Didn't Deserve THAT

With some annoying film characters, viewers will dislike them when they're alive but feel sorry when they actually die. Mary Corleone (Sofia Coppola) is a great example of this.

Mary was one of the very worst elements in this enormously disappointing threequel, thanks mainly to Sofia Coppola's infamously bad performance in the part. As a result, she's likely to cause eye-rolls every moment she appears on-screen, but nonetheless, to give the movie its due credit, Mary's climactic death scene - she gets caught in the crossfire when a hitman tries to kill her father - is really powerful.

Al Pacino's harrowing portrayal of grief and the use of the Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, a hauntingly beautiful bit of music, make this a proper tearjerker of a scene. It's also boosted by the editing in of scenes from Michael's past - him dancing with Mary and both of his wives - and the subsequent cut to many years later, when Michael dies alone in Sicily. This way, the thematic message of the scene becomes tragically clear - it's the full consequences of Michael's life of crime finally coming home. 

Put it this way: Mary's death will not give any viewer the slightest bit of elation. Furthermore, regardless of how irritatingly she was portrayed, Mary was fundamentally a good person who deserved to live a long life far away from her father's cruel world.
