20 Absolutely Insufferable Film Characters Who Didn't Deserve THAT

Viewers at large did not like Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf), Indiana Jones' long-lost son. Mutt was whiny, tiresome, and not especially well-played by LaBeouf, while the film's attempt to set Mutt up as the next Indy rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Having said this, that most certainly didn't mean that audiences wanted him dead.

Unfortunately, that is indeed what happened between the fourth and fifth Indiana Jones instalments. Around halfway through 2023's unwanted Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, it's revealed that Mutt died in Vietnam. Though the scene where Indy recounts Mutt's loss allowed Harrison Ford to do some of his best acting in the movie, it all came off as far too cruel.

The thing is, as bad as Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was, it did at least give Indy the happy ending that he's always deserved, with him married to Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) and now enjoying a healthy relationship with his son. No one wanted to see the Indiana Jones we saw in Dial of Destiny: a broken-down, miserable alcoholic who's separated from Marion and who asks to be left behind in the past to die during Dial of Destiny's time travel finale.

Mutt's death was what drove this decline, and while we didn't want or need to see Mutt again, we needed this mean-spirited twist far less. It would've been far better just to keep Mutt off-screen instead.
