20 Absolutely Insufferable Film Characters Who Didn't Deserve THAT

In Ari Aster's folk horror Midsommar, audience members wholeheartedly disliked Christian (Jack Reynor), and it's not hard to see why. He was a distant and emotionally immature man who gaslit his girlfriend and failed to show her any real support when she lost her family, while Christian was also a jerk to his friends. 

Does any of that mean he deserved to be drugged, stuffed into a bear carcass, and then burned alive? Most definitely not. A lot of audience members will have been crossing their fingers for his demise, partly because he was a bad egg all around and partly because he wasn't a very well-written character in general, but the sheer brutality of this death was much worse than anyone probably expected. 

In the end, Christian's death will indeed make your stomach drop, as it was meant to. When protagonist Dani (Florence Pugh) allows the murderous cult to sacrifice Christian, it's not a triumphant victory over him. Rather, it's a sign of how she has completely lost herself and is now fully indoctrinated into the cult.
