20 Absolutely Insufferable Film Characters Who Didn't Deserve THAT

In Ridley Scott's arguably underrated philosophical crime thriller, Westray (Brad Pitt) is no good person, given that he's involved in drug dealing and all, but he's also one of the less scummy people in a movie that's filled with unsympathetic characters. At the very least, he's not violent. That didn't prevent him from getting the most violent death in the film, though.

Throughout The Counsellor, it is emphatically conveyed to both the characters and the audience that greed has terrible consequences. Once you step into the world of the cartel, it's inescapable, and tragedy is inevitable. The unnamed title character (Michael Fassbender) suffers badly thanks to his decision to get involved, and so does Westray, who suffers an astonishingly brutal death that will have had whole cinemas watching through their fingers. 

Earlier in the movie, another character described a Bolito, which is a mechanical garotte that tightens and tightens around the victim's neck until they are decapitated. In a fine example of the Chekhov's Gun rule, that device is indeed deployed late in the story, and it's used on Westray when main antagonist Malkina (Cameron Diaz) finally catches up with him. 

In a ferociously nasty sequence that probably single-handedly earned The Counsellor its 18 certificate in the UK, Westray is slowly decapitated and, despite his best attempts to free himself, his throat is ultimately ripped open with extremely gory results. Sure, it was Westray's fault for getting involved in the first place, but still. This was a lot.
