20 Action Films From The 1990s You Must Watch
11. Blade (1998)
Before their acquisition by Disney, Marvel had already made a few films based on their comic book characters, but they had enjoyed mixed results. However, it was the success of Blade that convinced fans and critics that there was a future for films adaptations of the Marvel characters.
Wesley Snipes stars as Blade, a half-vampire “daywalker” who hunts vampires. With the help of his weaponsmith Abraham Whistler, played by Kris Kristofferson, Blade wages war against all vampires with his expertise in martial arts and is equipped with an array of weapons that exploit their weaknesses, such as garlic, silver and sunlight.
When Blade discovers a vampire named Frost plans to awaken a blood god and use its power to overthrow the human race, he must use all his skills as a vampire hunter to track Frost down while also fighting his own urges to drink human blood.
Despite the film receiving a mixed reception from critics, it was Marvel’s first major box office success and garnered a cult following thanks to its rapid fire action and impressive visual style. It also helped pave the way for future comic book adaptations and is regarded as one of Wesley Snipes best films.
