There are movies that wow us with real-time stunt work, incredible martial arts sequences and explosions performed without models or CGI. Then there’s Crank 2, where everything’s subordinate to an endless succession of over-the-top gags.

“He was dead,” claims the poster, addressing the previous film’s ending, “but he got better.” With the tone established, you’re now free to enjoy a movie where Jason Statham, pursuing the villains who’ve stolen his heart (long story), teams up with a Chinese prostitute, a Tourette’s sufferer and Corey Haim. Just when you think it can’t get any stranger, along comes Geri Halliwell, playing Statham’s mother.

Crank 2 is less a movie than a litmus test – if you like your action served straight-up, without humour, irony or homages to Toho movies, you should really give this one a miss.
