13. Hallow Road
A return to form for acclaimed Under the Shadow director Babak Anvari, Hallow Road is a drum-tight horror-thriller revolving around two parents (Rosamund Pike and Matthew Rhys) who race to help their teenage daughter cover up a car accident she caused.
Despite its high-profile lead actors, Hallow Road is a shining of example of doing a lot with few resources - with its scant locations (being set mostly inside a car) and tiny cast, it's a film propelled forward by its tight, suspenseful script, Anvari's moody filmmaking, and two excellent performances from Pike and Rhys.
At just 80 minutes in length it's also clearly aware of its own conceptual limitations and doesn't drag things out any longer than necessary, in turn delivering an eerie, unsettling ride that fuses its queasily believable setup with something a little more heightened.
If you're in the market for a low-fi genre romp that thoroughly respects your time, look no further.
