20 Awesome J-Horror Movies Every Horror Fan Should See
7. Dark Water
Plot: A divorced mother moves into a new apartment with her daughter but discovers it is haunted by a sinister entity.
Dark Water is not only one of the finest J-Horror movies of all time but it's one of the most underrated horror films out there.
It's directed by Ring's Hideo Nakata, who once again proves himself an absolute master of creepy visuals and building atmosphere. It's a terrifying experience and while it deviates from the slow-burn delivery of Ring by having more set-pieces throughout the run-time, the many scares are never predictable and are always extremely frightening.
As well as being a terrific thriller it's also a very moving dramatic story with a wonderful commitment to character-building that leads to an ending that is as shocking as it is sad. Dark Water is a truly great marriage of shocks and a refined story which makes it one of the greatest horror movies of the 2000s.
A well-shot and acted, but scare-free and overall mediocre American remake starring Jennifer Connelly was released in 2005.
