13. The Ugly Stepsister
As Disney continues its industrious glut of soulless live-action remakes, there's something to be said for filmmakers going back to the original fairy-tale source and delivering an altogether more adult adaptation.
And here we have a brilliantly radical take on Cinderella, unfolding from the perspective of Cinders' "ugly" stepsister Elvira (Lea Myren), as inspired by the Brothers Grimm's 1812 story Aschenputtel.
An astonishing directorial debut from Emilie Blichfeldt, The Ugly Stepsister is an Oscar-nominated visual feast which gives way to some deeply hurl-worthy body horror elements, all while Lea Myren delivers a stunning performance as the title character.
Ultimately this is enough of a sicko romp that one stomach-churning sit will be enough for most.
It's terrific, but some of its later imagery in particular is so revolting and gag-worthy on an elemental level that you probably won't ever want to go back there. And that's just fine.
