20 Baffling IMDb Top 250 Placements You Won't Believe

13. The Usual Suspects

Interstellar Cooper
Gramercy Pictures

The Film:

Bryan Singer's highly famous thriller, which is well-known for its legendary rug-pulls.

Placement: #126

Why It's Wrong:

Given the recent Kevin Spacey scandal, this one might face a big drop. It's uncomfortable watching him in anything now. However, at this time it is apparently one of the top 30 films ever made. It's another bizarre inclusion into the Top 50 films on the list.

It's a very enjoyable and well-written thriller with some awesome performances, but it doesn't become a great film until the very end. The plot twists are amazing, although unfortunately they've probably been spoiled for you by the internet. It's the epitome of a good film made great by its ending. Rankings like this should be based on lots of things, not just a film's ending.

It's also sometimes hollow and substance-free, and the sheer level of adoration the film continues to inspire is just a bit much.

Thelma and Louise, Hard Boiled, The Fugitive, Speed, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Die Hard with a Vengeance, Matilda, Scream, Titanic, Lost Highway, The Thin Red Line, Pleasantville, Run Lola Run, Ring, Magnolia, South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut... those are all 90s films that are either just as good or better than The Usual Suspects and aren't even on the list.

Still, with both the main star and director (Bryan Singer) caught up in sexual assault scandals, this one may fall to a more acceptable position soon enough.
