20 Baffling IMDb Top 250 Placements You Won't Believe

14. Fight Club

Interstellar Cooper
20th Century Fox

The Film:

The world-famous dark comedy which centers on dissatisfied men channeling their frustrations into beating each other up. It's probably the most popular film that Edward Norton, Brad Pitt or David FIncher have been involved in.

Placement: #10

Why It's Wrong:

Fight Club is not the tenth best film of all time. That is utterly preposterous.

The thing with Fight Club is that it's received a fair amount of backlash over the years. It seems cool to hate to some extent, so it's difficult to see how it's managed to get all to tenth best of all time. Is the backlash deserved? Not really, no.

Fight Club has problems: it's far too long, it's ideology is more simple than it thinks and the opening 15 minutes are pretty awful. However, the acting and directing are unreal, and the film makes lots of great, powerful and darkly comic observations about society.

It's an acquired taste, but if you relate to it you're in for a treat. Therefore, it definitely deserves to be on the list, but it's a 4-star film and it shouldn't be quite so high. It's another case where the mixture of the film's actual quality and the backlash against it make the high placement very surprising. A very accomplished film and it shouldn't be cool to hate, but it shouldn't be ranked so highly either.

Where It Should Be: #150-200
