20 Best Films Of 2017 (So Far)
10. T2 Trainspotting
What with the disastrous belated sequels for Zoolander and Bad Santa recently, you could have been forgiven for giving Trainspotting's long-in-gestation sequel a wide birth. Though the original ranks as one of the greatest British films ever made, it was a fairly smartly self-contained story - even despite the presence of a book sequel.
The worry was that going back would compromise on the original, which was so perfectly of its time that trying to recapture its magic would be a little redundant in 2017. But then you should remember that Danny Boyle is still the director, and he doesn't make bad movies.
T2 is the perfect continuation of the first film, expanding on the characters and unravelling plot threads that were left subtly incomplete first time out. It builds the characters organically (aside from Begbie, but you can't expect progression from a force of nature), and adds heart in a way that is as glorious as it is disarming.
