20 Best Films Of 2017 (So Far)

9. Raw

Raw Movie
Wild Bunch

Everyone loves a cannibal movie, but you can rarely count on them to be critically impressive and legitimately good. They usually trade on exploitation film-making, replacing quality with shock and blood, but they still scratch an itch in their own way.

Raw, which was Julia Ducournau's debut rather unthinkably, meshes full-blooded gore with the strong foundation of a coming-of-age story against the backdrop of a particularly horrific world (which is JUST too close to reality to be comfortable). You could accuse it of being a heavy-handed vegetarian morality tale, but it's too smart to accept such vulgar classification, even if the messages are very obvious.

And wonderfully, it absolutely delivers for fans looking for something to satiate their blood-lust. It is not - and this bears repeating NOT - for the faint of heart, but if you can stomach it, you'll be rewarded with a fascinating study of sisterhood alongside the descent into Hell.
