20 Best Films Of 2017 (So Far)

8. I Am Not Your Negro

I Am Not Your Negro
Magnolia Pictures

Though it was officially released in 2016 (rather cynically to qualify it for Oscar consideration), I Am Not Your Negro wasn't properly released until this year, and as such deserves to be considered alongside the best of this year's crop.

It is a harrowing but absolutely essential document on America's racist history, with a study that couldn't feel more relevant in the current climate, and should be watched by everyone as part of their formative education.

Given its message - and the awful efficiency of it (if it's seeking rage, it is almost laser-guided to achieving that) - you can forgive some of the more amateurish technical moments. It is a truly vital documentary and a sobering lesson from the all-too recent past that we haven't learned enough yet.
