20 Best Films Of 2017 (So Far)

7. The Red Turtle

The Red Turtle
Wild Bunch

If you like your animations in the vein of Minions or Ice Age, you probably won't like The Red Turtle. It is wordless and provocatively slow in its thoughtfulness and it doesn't have the kind of mugging more consciously child-friendly fare has.

But as a study in minimalist story-telling it's a beautiful piece of art, gorgeously animated and a welcome change of pace to the ADHD film-making that now dominates the genre aside from Disney and Pixar.

Made by first-time director Michael Dudok de Wit, the film tells a mystical but universal tale of survival with wonderfully moving effect, which you'd expect from a film associated so closely with Studio Ghibli (it is produced by former studio head Toshio Suzuki). It's a beautiful and tender-hearted release and it deserves to be considered among the best animations released this decade.
