9. The Witch
Another recent horror movie with the potential for art house credentials is The Witch, the directorial debut from American filmmaker Roger Eggers which takes place in the early 17th century, a time of Puritanical witch trials and superstition in the early days of colonial America.
After being banished from a colony, the religiously devout William (Ralph Inneson) resettles with his family deep in the New England forest and begins rebuilding his farm. When one of his young children goes missing, fear sets in that a witch resides deep within the woods, and the behaviour of his other children becomes increasingly unsettling. Psychological drama is blurred with supernatural horror, as black ravens and goats presage a dark outcome for the pious and devout family.
The Witch marked yet another high point for the production company A24, who have positioned themselves as purveyors of high class independent cinema ever since they released Spring Breakers and The Spectacular Now back in 2013. The Witch stands as a bold and promising debut for Eggers, who is set to return to theatres this year with a new black and white horror film, The Lighthouse.
