David Robert Mitchell's It Follows is a film which is self-conscious about its old school horror references. From the synth score to the slow and meticulous tracking shots, cautiously revealing the environments to the audience, it's a film which screams "homage to John Carpenter" from the first frame.

Fortunately, unlike many other recent horror movies which are conscious nods to the classic films of the 1970s and 80s, It Follows is crafted with such class and respect that it can be seen as an effective continuation of this canon, rather than a cheap imitation. An entity which can only be seen by its intended victim, taking the shape of anyone it chooses to, stalks teens after sexual encounters, much like Sadako from the Ring series hunting down those who watch her video.

It Follows is structured almost with the logic of a dream, and Mitchell commits some striking imagery to the screen and builds up several set pieces which are genuinely chilling. Fans have had a great deal of fun reading into the film's various subtexts on sexual promiscuity, and there's little doubt that it is considered a true horror masterpiece for the current millennium.
