20 Best Indie Movies Of 2015

18. Tangerine

Shooting the film entirely on an iPhone5 might have given the press something to talk about when Tangerine came out, but director Sean Baker transcends this seemingly gimmicky approach to film-making from the very first scene, launching the audience into a fast-paced jaunt across Los Angeles' underbelly. Inspired by a donut store (of all things), Tangerine sits very much in the tradition of free-wheeling spontaneous cinema where the viewer is left wondering whether or not they're watching actors or real people plucked off the city streets. Featuring a roster of trans sex workers and their pimps and customers, it's a snappy and exhilarating journey into lives rarely explored in cinema. There's a campaign going to ensure the cast of Tangerine get the recognition they deserve at the Academy Awards next year - the film certainly stands out for its unconventional casting decisions which paid dividends in the final product. Whether or not they'll be in the running for a golden statue remains to be seen.
