8. You Were Never Really Here

Joaquin Phoenix You Were Never Really Here

Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin) does it again with this intoxicatingly brutal reinterpretation of a familiar genre narrative, starring an excellent Joaquin Phoenix as a triggerman who uses his special kills to rescue trafficked girls.

Clocking in at an ultra-lean 90 minutes, the movie is brutally to-the-point - and just straight-up brutal - giving Phoenix a canvas on which to give one of the most physical and intense performances of his career.

Both as a character-driven thriller and a more existential drama, You Were Never Really Here soars, aided by some fantastically evocative cinematography and a pulsing score from the ever-brilliant Jonny Greenwood.
