20 Best Indie Movies Of 2018

7. Burning

Lee Chang-dong’s Oscar-shortlisted mystery-drama Burning is one of the year's most unforgettable films, a genre-bending enigma in which an initial meet-cute turns into a detective thriller and finally something else entirely.

This is absolutely one of those movies best seen without knowing much, but rest assured, Chang-dong makes the most of his beefy 148 minute runtime with a ludicrously atmospheric slow-burn, ratcheting suspense and unease up to almost unbearable levels before film's end.

The three principals are all fantastic - especially The Walking Dead's Steven Yuen - while Hong Kyung-pyo's eye-popping cinematography exploits beautiful natural light, especially during a mesmerising topless dance scene.

It won't be for all tastes, but if you can appreciate methodical, deliberate drama that leaves the audience to draw their own conclusions, Burning is an instant classic.
