6. The Tale

The Tale Laura Dern
HBO

If it wasn't for the fact that Jennifer Fox's film was picked up by HBO shortly after its Sundance premiere, it likely would've ended up in serious Oscar contention.

Fox's drama is based on her own real-life experience of discovering she was sexually abused as a child, with Laura Dern playing Fox with an extraordinary amount of compassion and empathy.

Unflinching to an almost nauseating degree, The Tale employs hard-hitting flashbacks to tremendous effect as Fox's past slowly comes to the forefront, with a never-better Jason Ritter playing her insidious abuser.

This isn't for the weak of stomach, but its frankness is extremely courageous and it never feels less than completely authentic.
