15. Revenge
Quite possibly the most artful and brilliantly acted entry into the rape-revenge subgenre, Revenge is differentiated by a distinctly feminist tone as presented by writer-director Coralie Fargeat.
Though Revenge begins with the typical leering male gaze camerawork, reducing socialite protagonist Jen (Matilda Lutz) into a mere sex object, this is ultimately turned on its head as she finds herself forced to transform after being raped and left for dead.
Lutz gives a spectacularly courageous and physical performance in the central role, in a deeply unpleasant yet also viscerally satisfying revenge tale tinged with some unexpected yet deliciously executed surreal elements.
Gorgeously shot, superbly performed by both Lutz and her male aggressors and just a whole lot of lurid fun, Revenge does justice to a genre that too often doesn't try hard enough.
