12. Private Life
Tamara Jenkins' first film since 2007's The Savages was most certainly worth the wait, a deeply affecting and richly entertaining study of two well-off New Yorkers (Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn) making a last-ditch attempt to conceive a baby.
A familiar premise has fresh life breathed into it thanks to Jenkins' achingly human script, two of the strongest performances of Giamatti and Hahn's respective careers and a killer supporting turn by Kayli Carter as the couple's 25-year-old niece.
Smart, funny and above all else deeply honest, Private Life is more than just another navel-gazing Rich White People Problems movie: it's so much more universal and empathetic than that.
