The very first flashback we get to see in the franchise, Paul Leahy was a drug addict and had attempted to commit suicide by the time we see him wake up in a maze made up of barbed wire.

Jigsaw asks Paul whether his attempt was truly out of depression, or whether he was just doing it for some attention, and that his test in front of him was a way of proving the answer. Told that he had to climb through the wire to make it to the maze's exit within two hours, we're immediately introduced to Saw's unique style of crazy editing and watch on as Paul ends up flunky his game, bleeding out thanks to all the cuts he must have sustained.

Whilst it is a long way off reaching the gore levels of later games, the horror on the investigating officers' faces perfectly matches what most audience members must have looked like at the time.
