Considering that Harrison Ford doesn't show up until deep into Blade Runner 2049's third act, it falls to Ryan Gosling to effectively carry the movie, and that he most certainly does as replicant Blade Runner K.

Gosling does a fantastic job realising the "human" aspects of a replicant, as his arc sees him coming to believe that he's special, only to realise that, in fact, he isn't. Gosling sells the range of emotions incredibly well, and considering how much of the movie focuses on his facial expressions, he really had nothing to hide behind.

Gosling's fantastic work, certainly some of the best of his career, only deepens the meaning of the original film, realising the essence of humanity, and how in a tech-centric future, it may end up meaning something very different.
