The likes of Love Simon, Lady Bird and Eighth Grade have all wowed recently, and Booksmart is a bit of a mix of all three.
Olivia Wilde’s debut directorial feature is all about that same sort of raw authenticity that both isolates you in its cringe-factor but absolutely speaks to universal experiences. And added to that, Wilde captures a more conventional type of comedy that puts it alongside the likes of Superbad and Jonah Hill's underrated Mid 90s.
Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein are brilliant in the leads, with the kind of chemistry you can't pay for and through them we laugh, cry and shudder at their stumbles through experience.
