20 Best Movies Of 2019
17. Knives Out
Considering the furore around his work on The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson has taken something of a (unjust) beating in the past few years, but 2019 proved once more that he is a great story-teller with the delightful Knives Out.
A riff on the archetypal murder mysteries of Poirot and Clousseau, Knives Out brought together probably the best cast of the year for a whip-smart, occasionally caustic caper that is very clever, very funny and VERY entertaining.
And best of all, there's no cheap rugpull that seeks a huge shock at the end - rather, this is as carefully plotted as something that was formed in Johnson's head almost 15 years ago would be. It is satisfying and rewarding and more cinema should be like this.
