5. How To Have Sex
The directorial debut of Molly Manning Walker, How To Have Sex follows a classic coming-of-age mould, as sixteen-year-old Tara ventures to Crete with her friends for a holiday she hopes will welcome her into adulthood.
From this familiar premise, though, Walker and her young cast have produced a film of real originality and excitement, following Tara as she tries to grow up but is forced to encounter the lows life has to offer.
It's a sobering experience, full of compelling characters and pointed commentary about sex, consent, dreaming big and friendship, all of which are brought to life by a searing performance from star Mia McKenna-Bruce, who's Tara is one of the year's most remarkable creations.
Amusing, thrilling, achingly sad and vibrant, How To Have Sex is at times whimsical and at others heartbreaking. It's also honest, and the subject it tackles will surely have something to say to everyone, no matter where they are in life. Walker and McKenna-Bruce are newcomers to watch.
