8. Burning Sands
One of the most talked-about dramas from Sundance last year, Burning Sands is a searing examination of college hazing culture, ably directed with unflinching power by Fruitvale Station producer Gerard McMurray.
Considering how controversial pledge culture has proven in recent years, it's surprising there aren't more films on the subject, but by immersing audiences in the mindset of both the pledgees and the individuals orchestrating the quasi-torture, we get a well-rounded look at how these practises are institutionally enforced.
Gorgeously shot and strongly performed by its largely unknown cast, this is an unpleasant sit but one which asks vital questions about one of the most pressing issues in America right now.
