20 Best Netflix Original Movies Of 2019 - Ranked

12. The King

The King Timothee Chalamet
Plan B Entertainment

The King is worth watching for the Robert Pattinson scenes alone, with the actor proving so memorable in his role as The Dauphin that he even got his own official compilation video on Netflix's YouTube feed.

Batman aside, The King is a suitably epic historical drama chronicling the exploits of young Prince Henry as he - reluctantly - becomes the King of England.

Like with The Highwaymen, there's some mesmerising production design on display here, with the movie beautifully selling the grit, dirt and grime of medieval politics and battles, while Timothee Chalamet's stellar lead performance sells you on Henry's complicated internal struggle, while keeping up that shield of po-faced determination that made him such a convincing leader.

Those seeking a swords-and-sandals fix in a post-Game of Thrones world will definitely find a lot to enjoy here, with The King's top-notch acting and slick direction making the most of its powerful source material.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
