Guillermo del Toro's decades-in-the-making take on Frankenstein sure didn't disappoint - a fact made abundantly clear from its sumptuous-yet-violent prelude sequence.

In 1857, a Royal Danish Navy ship headed for the North Pole ends up trapped in ice, causing the crew to discover the grimly wounded Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac) nearby.

They rescue Victor just as the Creature (Jacob Elordi) can be heard roaring nearby, prompting them to hurriedly bring Frankenstein onboard their ship.

The Creature continues to pursue, prompting the naval officers to open fire upon him, which of course only angers him.

The Creature responds by brutally dispensing with a number of the crew members - throwing them around like ragdolls and snapping them in half, before clambering aboard and demanding that Victor be brought to him.

As the Creature continues to lay waste to the crew, the Captain finally shoots him overboard with a blunderbuss, and then shoots out the ice beneath him to send him to an apparent watery grave.

At this point we return to Victor, who begins to recount every sorry circumstance which led him to this moment.

If you somehow needed convincing that del Toro was giving this everything he had, the prelude sure as hell did it.
