20 Best Performances In Horror Movies
11. Jeff Goldblum - The Fly (1986)
Jeff Goldblum's defining role (save his crowd-pleasing turn in the Jurassic Park franchise) cast him as Seth Brundle, an undeniably ingenious scientist who finds his DNA fused with a fly after an experiment gone wrong.
The Fly shows director David Cronenberg at the height of his powers, and the visual effects are to die for, but it's Goldblum who steals the show with his unsettling lead performance.
In the role, Goldblum is eccentric, strange but lovable, and eventually arrogant, crass and dismissive. It's a startling juggling act, making Seth at once the good guy and the bad in a frantic 90-minute stretch, but Goldblum balances every one of Seth's fears, desires and pains with remarkable ease.
A lesser actor would have seen their performance lost under the character's prosthetics, but Goldblum cuts through the gore and physical deterioration to give the performance of his career.
