20 Best Survival Movies Of All Time
8. Gravity
The last of this list's brief space theme, Gravity is a mesmerising and stunning sci-fi film and a gripping tale of survival. It follows Dr Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) as their transport is struck by high speed space debris which throws them off course and leaves them alone, drifting in the vast expanse of space.
The film is a crazy intense space flick, anchored by a mostly one-woman performance from Bullock and the visually stunning direction of Alfonso Cuaron (who would go on to make the masterful Roma). It never lets up its assault on the senses, the whole thing watching like some HD nightmare.
But thanks to Bullock and the visual style of the scenery, Gravity never slips into over the top tropes or silly situations. It's constantly well controlled, engaging and wonderfully unpredictable, and watching Stone try and fight through her fear and anxiety is great to watch.
The kind of film that keeps you guessing, Gravity is a much-watch for anyone who likes films centred on survival, intensity and unbeatable effects.
