20 Best & Worst Movies From 2018 Oscar Nominees
10. Richard Jenkins
Best: The Shape Of Water (2017)
While he's one of the only parts of The Shape Of Water who wasn't written with the actor specifically in mind (it was intended for Sir Ian McKellen), Richard Jenkins' performance is a gift. He might be able to talk and is free, but he's essentially just as trapped as both Elisa and the monster by his homosexuality and problems with alcohol.
He's funny, endearing and subtly crafted, both to be pained and surprisingly chipper about his condition (as when he just accepts the monster eating his cat's head), and his insecurities are adorable. It's a far softer performance from Jenkins than may have been expected, but it's genius.
Worst: Waiting For Forever (2011)
At best, Waiting For Forever is an attempt to remake the "magic" that makes Nicholas Sparks novels and films so popular, but it fails on even that meager agenda and the result is soppy, soapy slush with a slightly creepy edge that someone of Jenkins' standing should have been absolutely nowhere near.
