20 Best & Worst Movies From 2018 Oscar Nominees
17. Mary J. Blige
Best: Mudbound (2017)
The history of rock stars turning to acting hasn't always been fruitful, but Mary J Blige's turn in the excellent Mudboud (which probably deserved a Best Film nod) definitely sits apart from that stereotype.
Her subtle, artful performance is one of the crown jewels of this emotionally loaded, devastating tale of race and love and humanity (though in truth, the whole cast is excellent and that might stand against her at the Oscars). It's a performance that deserves to be seen more.
Worst: Rock Of Ages (2012)
With more "standard" rock star material, Blige was part of a project in Rock Of Ages that was decidedly less subtle and less successful than Mudbound. After the success of the musical, it was bound to be made, but aside from a great performance by Tom Cruise and good songs, it's all a bit of a tepid disaster.
