20 Biggest Blockbuster Movie Showdowns Of All Time

14. Hong Kong Smackdown - Pacific Rim (2013)

Upon hearing that simple synopsis of 'giant robots versus giant aliens', you were able to decide if Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim was your kind of movie or not. While it only did a fraction of the box office business of Michael Bay's Transformers, Hollywood's other giant robot-based franchise, the movie's $411m box office gross was good enough to get a sequel greenlit for 2017. Featuring plenty of massive-scale destruction, Pacific Rim's best showdown comes as Jaeger Gipsy Danger faces off with a Kaiju against the backdrop of a neon-lit Hong Kong. With all of the backstory and world-building mostly out of the way, this sequence sees Pacific Rim thriving under the sheer absurdity of its central concept. Watching a skyscraper-sized robot use a ship as a bat and cargo containers as brass knuckles is as preposterous as it is entertaining, before things are literally taken to the next level when the Kaiju sprouts wings and takes the fight to the skies. Luckily, the Jaeger has a giant sword in reserve for just such an occasion, slicing through the winged monster before making an Olympic-level dismount back to solid ground.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
