20 Biggest Summer Box Office Bombs Of All Time
4. R.I.P.D.
Budget: $130 million (marketing costs unknown)
Box office: $78.3 million
Loss: $90-114 million
Ryan Reynolds makes another appearance on this list courtesy of R.I.P.D., the 2013 (alleged) comedy that was essentially a paranormal Men In Black and was quickly pronounced D.O.A. Reynolds actually managed to headline two flops in the same weekend as he also lent his voice to Turbo, but that one at least managed to make its money back internationally.
No such joy for R.I.P.D., which lost somewhere in the region of $100+ million when all was said and done. The official $130 million budget is considered a conservative estimate, with Universal Pictures declining to arrange press screenings – almost always the telltale sign of a stinker – and, with the writing indelibly marked on the wall, scaling back their marketing push for this expensive mishap.
Derivative, soulless and, much like Catwoman, unsettlingly cheap to look at given the prodigious budget, R.I.P.D. was laid to rest after earning a paltry $78 million at the box office.
