20 Comic Book Movies That Are Practically Flawless

5. Watchmen (2009)

There's no denying Zack Snyder is a divisive filmmaker, especially in the superhero genre, but fewer still can deny that his adaptation of Alan Moore's seminal DC comic series Watchmen is an awe-inspiring revelation.

Clocking in at over two-and-a-half hours and sporting a spotless ensemble cast led by Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Malin Ackerman, Billy Crudup and Patrick Wilson, the epic thriller takes place in alternate history where heroes were once idolised but are now deemed controversial and unwanted.

Dark and morose, the film is incredibly stylish, using Snyder's most recognisable traits to great effect, and expertly balances its many characters without losing sight of its mainline story.

Deemed "unfilmable" by original director Terry Gilliam, Watchmen is undeniably messy, but revels in its scope and melodrama all the same, making it one of the superhero genre's most unique and awe-inspiring achievements.
