20 Disaster Movies You Must See Before You Die

It's said that most people are either a Dante's Peak or a Volcano person - both were released in 1997, with the former proving marginally more successful at the box office while the latter went over better with critics.

Volcano is driven by the fundamentally ridiculous premise of a volcano forming underneath Los Angeles, and as such takes itself considerably less seriously than Dante's Peak.

No disaster movie cliche is left unturned in this gorgeous cheeseball romp, full of visually creative sequences which blanket LA in both lava and ash.

And then there's the all-timer set-piece where the surly chairman of the Metropolitan Transit Authority (John Carroll Lynch) hurls himself into red-hot lava in order to launch an employee to safety.

It's a hella-90s movie with Tommy Lee Jones firing on all cylinders as only he can. What more could you possibly want?
