20 Films To Watch If You Love Halloween But Hate Horror

5. The Addams Family & Addams Family Values (1991/1993)

Of all the movie and television versions of the Addams Family, the 1990s movies are the best adaptation of the barmy household. The stripped back colour palette and dull shading heightens the gothic, unusual lifestyle of the family. The humour and dialogue is cleverly written around their violent hobbies to create a greater sense of morbidity.

Plus, each character is cast perfectly. From Angelica Huston as the haunting Morticia to Christina Ricci as the sardonic Wednesday, or Christopher Lloyd as the dim Uncle Fester, it was the acting performances in these films which made the titular family so lovable.

The sequel – Addams Family Values – is arguably the stronger movie of the two as it is even funnier, scarier and provides us with the iconic villain Debbie Jellinsky. But either way, both films are a fantastic viewing for the Halloween holidays as they’re a hilarious look into the Addams Family’s quirky lifestyle.
