20 Films To Watch If You Love Halloween But Hate Horror

4. Edward Scissorhands (1990)

Edward Scissorhands is unapologetically Tim Burton, renowned for its distinctively offbeat set designs, emotive Danny Elfman score and eccentric characters.

The story tells of a young man named Edward, artificially created by an inventor, who was close to being fully human, with the small exception of having scissors for hands. Despite Edward’s odd appearance - a pale complexion, scars and literal scissorhands, he wins the audience over with his gentle nature and childlike attitude.

Local saleswoman Peg Boggs discovers the innocent young man and takes him in as her own. The townspeople eventually discover how harmless Edward is and he becomes famed for his hedge trimming and hair cutting skills, even managing to win the heart of Peg’s daughter Kim. But Kim’s boyfriend sabotages him by framing him for a crime.

It ends in tragedy as Kim shares one final kiss with Edward, before leaving him at the castle where he was first discovered and telling the towns residents that he and her boyfriend killed each other.

The film is haunting and vivid but never too scary, and always with a sense of charm and warmth.
