20 Great Films You Won't Believe Aren't On IMDb's Top 250
17. In Bruges
Rating: 7.9
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, the latest film by the ludicrously talented screenwriter/director Martin McDonagh is doing very well on the Top 250. Three Billboards is a masterful film and one of 2017's finest, so it's wonderful to see the film on the list, but there's something missing and that is McDonagh's directional debut: In Bruges. In Bruges is even better than Three Billboards and is a modern classic.
In Bruges is simply masterful. It's got great directing from McDonagh, it's got a trio of fantastic performances from Colin Farrell (Who is a terrific actor, despite all the hate he gets), Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes, but most of all, it has one of the best screenplays of the 21st century.
The script is a near-unthinkable mix of bleakness, hilarity, pathos and graphic violence, making it one of the best mixtures of light and dark in recent memory. A work of storytelling genius and one of the best films of the noughties, this deserves to be seen by everyone.
Where It Should Be: #50-#150
